What is Space? Elements of Design

space as an element of design

Don’t confuse them with the principles of design — unity, balance, proximity, alignment, contrast, emphasis, repetition, proportion, hierarchy, movement, and figure-ground. Design principles help designers arrange elements on a page in the most logical, functional, and appealing manner. Zendesk has awesome use of white space into their design despite use of awesome color combination. We can see that our eyes flows into the design and it’s obvious to see the text with high visual weight and spaces creates more attention to it. To work more effectively with space, you must first become aware of it and learn to see it — learn to see the shapes that space forms and how space communicates. This is second part of a series on design principles for beginners.

Create Focus with Space

The strategic use of lines can add dynamism and direction to a design, leading the viewer's gaze to important focal points or creating a sense of balance and harmony. Sometimes less is more, and sometimes less is everything, so space makes sure everything is where it’s supposed to be on your design. It highlights the important elements and makes it easier for the viewer to catch the main message of your digital design. The right balance of negative and positive space makes the composition complete and helps to create visual interest. Typography also creates a visual hierarchy in a design, by telling the reader where to start and where to go. You can do that by choosing different characteristics for your text, such as size, color, height, and weight.

Design principles are guidelines that dictate how to use the elements effectively. They help designers capture the essence and personality of the subject in aesthetically pleasing ways. Then, I'll cover the principles that guide the use of these elements, from contrast to pattern, ensuring your design looks good and feels right. Negative space actually performs vital functions in a composition and can be just as important as the positive spaces. I have been looking out and exploring all the different types of forms that I could see.

Traditional Herringbone Pattern

Now that you have an understanding of negative space within design, make sure you consider this when designing your next piece. Remember, each time you create a shape within a design you are in turn creating negative space. The reflective surface of the glass mosaic enhances the kitchen’s appearance by creating reflections of its surroundings. The multicolored glass mosaic pattern creates a pixilated effect and injects dynamism into the kitchen space, adding a luxurious touch. Additionally, the ease of cleaning glass surfaces is a notable advantage, and it lends a pixelated aesthetic to the kitchen. Mixing textures and contrasting them add to the depth and interest of the room scheme.

Collage art mainly relies on overlapping of different shapes to create depth. In this collage, “ManRayMisunderstood,” the artist also uses color and value to show the nearness of different objects. Note how the dark building is the farthest away, and the brightly hued flower creature is closest.

The ultimate guide to using space as an element of design

However, don’t forget that to break the rules, you have to know them well first. And finally, your design can have one of these two color systems – CMYK or RGB. To choose the right one for your art, you need to first analyze where it’ll be used. The Enterprise’s mission may have been to explore strange new worlds, but as a designer, space will be the medium you use to create new worlds. Once you have your baseline grid, it serves as the foundation for your margins and leading. Margins are the spaces at the top and bottom of the page and around text blocks, while the leading is the space between lines of text.

Questions related to design principles

Geometric shapes, such as squares, circles, and triangles, convey a sense of structure and order, while organic shapes, like those found in nature, evoke feelings of fluidity and spontaneity. By manipulating shapes, designers can establish a sense of hierarchy and create visual interest, making certain elements stand out while maintaining overall coherence. So these were the seven basic elements of design – form, shape, line, color, texture, typography, and space. These various elements can make your piece successful when used right. To do that, you’ll need to practice, experiment, and learn the rules of applying them, known as the principles of design.

For example, blue usually evokes emotions of tranquility, trust, and stability, while red is a louder color expressing passion, excitement, and sometimes anger. So, knowing the psychology of colors will help you decide whether you should go with red, blue, or maybe yellow and what colors you should mix with them for the best result. It’s usually used to divide the content of your design or website, to frame a composition, and well… it does have many options for usage. Whether you want your design to evoke passion, calm, trustworthiness, excitement, scarcity, or desire, an effective use of space will help you achieve it.

Space, often hailed as the “final frontier” in various fields, holds a critical role in design, fundamentally shaping our perception and interaction with various forms of art and design. In the realm of graphic design, space isn’t mere emptiness; rather, it’s a potent tool that can elevate a simple design into a masterpiece. This comprehensive exploration aims to unravel the multifaceted concept of space in graphic design, encompassing its definition, significance, roles, and practical applications. Consciously analyze that space, and deliberately use it to create a better design. View it as an essential design element, and then view the relationship between space and positive elements as a design element that you shape.

Items that appear at the top of a page or app also tend to be viewed as having a higher hierarchy than those appearing below. The WWF logo, shown earlier, is an example of making use of the principle of gestalt to create interesting designs. Texture can be created by a repeated pattern of lines, or by using tiled images of textures. Above, the diagonal lines add a ‘grip’ effect to an otherwise ‘smooth’ rectangle. Color is not traditionally classified as a principle of design in art.

The elements defined as parts of space are numerous and can refer to the active and passive use of the empty areas around other design elements. For example, positive space refers to the focal point of composition in graphic design and art, while negative space is found in the absence of objects. The elements comprising the different forms of space are addressed in the following subsections.
